Separated Materials

Series 4 was reprocessed in January 1991 because of the number of cellulose nitrate negatives in the collection and the dangers in storage of nitrate negatives.

Negatives that were doubtful or clearly nitrate had to be separated and disposed of. Many of these were printed; in these cases, the "Neg." designation on the finding aid was changed to "Pos."

A number of nitrate negatives were not printed because: they were duplicates or near-duplicates of existing images, they were unidentified and of no research value, they were judged superfluous, or they were of poor quality. Negatives that were not printed and were discarded were images: 4-5; 8; 10; 78; 81-83; 100; 110-111; 114; 118; 121-122; 130-132; 137; 143-145; 149; 151-158; 160-161; 170-171; 174; 180; 182-184; 188-190; 192-194; 199-200; 203-204; 207; 217; 224-229; 231; 263-275; 277-278; 281-282; 284-286; 292-299; 302-312; 315-317; 321-322; 323-324; 326; 342-343; 347-348; 350; 367; 370-371; 381-382; 384; 386; 388; 390; 392; 399; 402-407; 409-412; 414; 416-418; 488-493; 525; 528; 534-538; 544-545; 552-554; 566; 568; 572; 582; 592; 595; 600; 602; 605-606; 618; 627; 632-633; 643; 647-659; 672-673; 675-676; 678; 691-721; 731; 733; 737; 740; 750; 784; 789-797; 799-800; 803-813; 816-821; 857-858; 868; 877; 879; 881-882; 895-896; 901-902; 908-909; 931-932; 934-936; 945-954; 963-972; 974-975; 978-980; 984; 988; 990-997; 999-1001; 1011-1014; 1023; 1036; 1038; 1040-1044; 1058-1062; 1067; 1075-1078; 1080; 1082; 1085-1089; 1094; 1096-1098; 1102; 1104; 1107-1108; 1110-1111; 1114-1117; 1119; 1121; 1124; 1127-1129; 1131-1134; 1136-1137; 1139; 1148; 1154-1157; 1160-1161; 1163-1164; 1166-1168; 1170; 1172-1173; 1177; 1179-1180; 1182-1185; 1190; 1193; 1198; 1200; 1222; 1224-1229; 1242-1243; 1254-1255; 1262-1266; 1268; 1272-1274; 1281-1284; 1286-1287; 1289; 1291-1293; 1298; 1300; 1302-1303; 1305-1306; 1322-1323; 1330-1332; 1335; 1349; 1351; 1353-1355; 1364-1366; 1369; 1371; 1374-1375; 1382-1383; 1389-1390; 1392; 1394; 1400; 1403-1412; 1417; 1419; 1421-1422; 1424-1427; 1428-1429; 1433-1436; 1441-1442; 1444; 1449; 1452-1454; 1468; 1475; 1477; 1480; 1493; 1506; 1509-1510; 1512-1514; 1532-1538; 1540-1545; 1547-1548; 1554; 1558; 1560-1561; 1566-1568; 1576-1578; 1583-1585; 1587; 1589-1590; 1592-1598; 1600-1604; 1607-1609; 1611-1612; 1615; 1618; 1623-1624; 1626-1627; 1630-1631; 1633; 1635-1642; 1644-1645; 1647-1652; 1692-1694; 1713; 1716.

Processing Information

Series 4 was reprocessed in January 1991 because of the number of cellulose nitrate negatives in the collection and the dangers in storage of nitrate negatives.

Negatives that were doubtful or clearly nitrate had to be separated and disposed of. Many of these were printed; in these cases, the "Neg." designation on the finding aid was changed to "Pos."

A number of nitrate negatives were not printed because: they were duplicates or near-duplicates of existing images, they were unidentified and of no research value, they were judged superfluous, or they were of poor quality.

Negatives that were clearly safety film were kept, but separated from prints.

The original numbering of photographs, folders, and boxes has been preserved.

When the nitrate negative was not printed, the photo number was designated "empty" so that the numbering of the images would not be changed.

The numbering of the pages of the original finding aid has not been changed. In some cases, information on the new pages extended beyond one page; in these cases, the extensions have been labeled "continuation of page _."

The number of items was sometimes given in the original finding aid (for example, "A. Walter John Lemke; family, friends, students. (90 items)." In these cases, the finding aid was not changed, although in fact there are now fewer items.
