Scope and Contents

Contains 58 folders of correspondence, addresses, reports, scrapbooks, and campaign literature, together with sound recordings and television films, all concerning Brooks Hays's activities as Congressman from the Fifth Arkansas District, 1942-1959. Much of the material pertains to Hays' 1958 Congressional campaign and subsequent defeat by "write-in" candidate [Thomas] Dale Alford. See particular sub-series descriptions for detailed summaries.

Access to business records in Box 19 is restricted; Box 19 is not a separate physical box, but a designation given to folders that are stored in Boxes 93-94. Some items from Series 1, 3, 4, 6, and 8 have also been restricted, and are stored in Boxes 93-96.
