From the Collection:

Correspondence, memoranda, speeches, legislative bills, reports and other materials comprising, for the most part, Oren Harris' Congressional files. Harris, a native of Hempstead County, Arkansas, represented the fourth Congressional district of Arkansas in the 77th-89th United States Congresses, from January 3, 1941 until his resignation February 2, 1966 to accept appointment as United States District Judge for the Western District of Arkansas. For 23 years a member of the House Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce, Harris served the committee as chairman from 1956 until his retirement from Congress. Materials, most of which date from later than 1940, pertain primarily to legislative matters, especially in the area of transportation, communications, food and drugs, securities, aviation, natural resources, business and industrial regulation, public health and legislative oversight of governmental regulatory bodies; to creators political interests and activities in Arkansas and the nation; and to correspondence with, services rendered on behalf of, and to correspondence with, services rendered on behalf of, and relations with his constituents.
