Scope and Contents

Subseries 1 deals specifically with campaign materials in which JPH was a candidate for congress. General election issues correspondence and materials are located in boxes 1-4 and part of box 5. The materials in these boxes are made up of general campaign correspondence (boxes 1 and 2), official and colleague correspondence (box 2), offers of assistance/volunteers (boxes 2 and 3), thank you correspondence (box 3) and congratulations correspondence (boxes 3, 4 and 5). Boxes 5 through 12 deal with the Hammerschmidt campaign office administration materials. Boxes 5-9 contain materials pertaining to contributions and contributors to the campaigns. Following this are materials on events and scheduling (box 9, 10 and part of 11), campaign financial materials (box 11) and general office administration materials (boxes 11 and 12). Box 12 also houses advertising materials related to the JPH campaigns. Media materials make up the contents of boxes 12-15. Media correspondence is located in boxes 12 and 13, news and press releases in box 13, and newspaper clippings in boxes 13, 14 and 15. The remainder of the boxes in subseries 1 consist of research and reference materials used during the campaigns. Assorted background materials are located throughout boxes 15-20. These materials include voting records and background materials about JPH, his opponents and his colleagues (boxes 15-17). Assorted background materials also include vote and election statistics (box 17), polls and voting trends materials (box 18) and assorted district information (boxes 18, 19 and 20). Specific election issues are housed in boxes 20 and 21, and are organized alphabetically by topic. Boxes 21 through 33 are devoted to campaign materials originating from election agencies, primarily the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC, boxes 21-24), the Republican National Committee (RNC, boxes 24-29), and the Republican Party of Arkansas (RPA, boxes 29-32). Boxes 32 and 33 contain other election agencies' materials, and general campaign publications make up the remainder of Subseries 1 in boxes 33 and 34. The agencies and general publications materials are organized alphabetically by topic. NOTE: In box 11 are files related to Robert F. Barbour, who was JPH Re-election Campaign Treasurer until he resigned in 1978; materials related to the senate race between Dale Bumpers and Asa Hutchison are located in file 33 of box 16; the following counties' voter registration lists (boxes 19 and 20) are located in Series 20, OV: Baxter, Washington, Lafayette, Crawford, Randolph, Howard, Pope, Garland, Carroll, Newton, Cleburne and Jefferson; some of the election agencies' materials and general campaign publications are organized alphabetically rather than chronologically for easier access.
