Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Series I contains materials relating to JPH's personal life outside of his congressional duties. Box 1 and 2 contains general personal correspondence. Box 1, File 15 contains a copy of a letter inviting JPH to be the personal house guest of George Bush at his diplomatic home in China. Throughout the personal correspondence are many other letters and postcards from Bush. Box 2 contains correspondence with John Arthur Hammerschmidt (JPH's son), Virginia Hammerschmidt (JPH's wife), and Junie Hammerschmidt (JPH's mother) followed by correspondence pertaining to personal business ventures. Next, the birthday and condolence correspondence contain many familiar names in politics, including a condolence note, found in File 33, written by Bill Clinton after the death of Virginia's father written the year JPH and Clinton both sought the same congressional seat. Personal materials follow in Box 3, including a very few military records and a childhood book: The Story of Arkansas. JPH was a member of a great many organizations, both socially and professionally. Membership information is contained in Box 3. The Hump Pilots Association was a group of men who flew in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Their newsletters found in Files 32-39 contain many photos taken during that time period, including one of JPH found in File 34. Box 4 contains general memorabilia items, such as a Harrison High School reunion materials and cachets from many military launch commemorations.
