Scope and Contents

This series includes materials related to domestic policy. It is divided into seven subseries. Subseries 1 includes materials related to government and politics. Materials pertain to presidents and presidential administrations; the Constitution and Declaration of Independence; the United States Congress; political parties; politicians; the United States Supreme Court; governments agencies; and general materials. Subseries 2 includes left wing materials. Materials include items related to communism, socialism, liberalism; "aliens" and immigration; the House Un-American Activities Committee, Joseph McCarthy, and the sedition trials of the 1940s and 1950s; alleged "Reds," liberal and left wing organizations and publications; the labor movement; the entertainments industry; artists, poets and writers; radio and television; and both conservative and liberal journalists. Subseries 3 pertains to conservative and right wing materials. Materials relate to Allen A. Zoll and the National Council for American Education; conservatives, organizations, and far right groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and Neo-Nazies; business and the economy; and the taxpayer's revolt. Subseries 4 includes materials related to education, including general materials; materials on youths and students; and student radicals of the 1960s and 1970s. Subseries 5 pertains to materials related to social issues. Materials include items related to African Americans, the civil rights movement, and Hispanics; racist organizations; women’s issues and organizations; changes in sexual morality in the 1960s and 1970s; homosexuality; the 1960s counterculture; drug and alcohol abuse; crime and law enforcement; health care. and poverty. The terms “Racial Balance” and “Racial Agitation” were used by the Christian Crusade for related to racial quotas, busing, and the activities of supporters of the civil rights movement; they are retained below and designated by quotation marks. Subseries 6 includes materials related to religion. Christianity; denominations the ecumenical movement; evangelicalism, fundamentalism, and Pentecostalism; outside of the United States; Judaism; and topics related to religion, including atheism and cults. The section on Judaism also includes materials on anti-Semitic organizations. Subseries 7 includes general research materials.
